Video Contest
in conjunction with
Homeschool Day at the Capitol
Christian Home Educators of Colorado is looking for aspiring Christian filmmakers to create short film clips promoting the exciting events planned for this year's Homeschool Day at the Capitol.
Entrants must use the theme "The Holy Cause of Liberty" from Patrick Henry's famous "Give Me Liberty or Give Me Death" speech. Video should be submitted to CHEC no later than February 1, 2011 to enter the contest. A $200 cash prize will be awarded to the best home video production. In addition to receiving a $200 cash prize, the winning video will be shown at the Liberty Celebration at Homeschool Day at the Capitol on April 7th, 2011. First Lego League Homeschool Group for Kids 9-12 Years Old

Many of you enjoy hearing the talented young performers at the state conference in June each year. Perhaps you have wondered how these young people were selected. Each year we invite interested families to submit an audition tape to the General Sessions coordinator by April 15. If you know talented youngsters or families who could bless us at the conference, please urge them to apply, or let us know and we will contact them. Not only is this a wonderful opportunity to bless other homeschoolers, but it can be listed on your resume for college; not many students have the opportunity to perform for over 1500 people! The contest for this area will be May 8 and will be in either Rifle or Meeker. The person is still getting a final site; but kids could start working on their presentations and send in their registration forms to Kris Melnikoff in Collbran. It's not on the brochure but in addition to the winners getting expense paid trips around their corner of the state and listed other events, we have come up with so far $250 cash prize per quarter of the state. I have printed brochures and they can contact me at either by email or phone if anyone wants some sent.
It’s time to stretch your imagination! Innovative students in grades 5-8 are invited to demonstrate their ingenuity by creating an invention that incorporates the use of rubber bands in the Second Annual Rubber Band Contest for Young Inventors! This exciting contest encourages engineering design, creative thinking and problem-solving, while incorporating national and state academic content standards. There is more than $15,000 in prizes for students and their mentoring teachers. The deadline is February 10, 2010 and applications may be received via hard copy mail, email or fax. The top seven spellers on this test will be able to participate in the Rocky Mountain News Colorado State Bee on March 6, 2010, at the Denver Convention Center, 700 14th Street, Denver, Colorado. An oral bee for the top 25 qualifying participants will follow the written test. First, second, and third place ribbons will be awarded.

This event is the first step in an annual competition sponsored by the National Geographic Society. The winner of the CHEC bee will take the qualifying test for the State Bee, to be held April 9, 2010. The State Bee winner will compete at the National Bee in Washington DC in May 2010.

Category 1 (ages 7-10):
The Bible talks about God knowing all our days and all the days of time. Why do you think you were born now instead of in another generation?
Category 2 (age 11-14):
If you were charged with the task of investing $100,000 how would you invest it and why? Part of the requirement is you cannot give it away or spend it on yourself.
Category 3 (ages 15-19):
How does the news media (TV news, newspapers, news websites or blogs) affect your perception of America? Be sure you talk about coverage of both good and bad news.
Form
Essays come in many different forms, from descriptive to compare/contrast to narrative, etc. For this contest, the essays are meant to present the writer’s point of view (in a sense, their argument) but there are many different ways the writer could go about doing this. You could use the narrative approach and tell about a personal experience or one from history to demonstrate why you believe your particular argument is true or false. You could give a couple examples of practical application and then compare/contrast how it would work out in real life. The options are limitless!
There is no dictated form given for these essays, but it is still good to be purposeful in your writing style. Take some time to research different essay styles/forms and then decide which best suits your purpose. Entrant Qualifications
Category 1: Homeschoolers ages 7 to 10 as of October 1, 2009.
Category 2: Homeschoolers ages 11 to 14 as of October 1, 2009.
Category 3: Homeschoolers ages 15 to 19 as of October 1, 2009.
Only one entry per student.
For the purposes of this contest, an eligible student must have been homeschooled and received the majority of his or her educations through home education during the past year.
- Contest Guidelines -
1. Essays must be completely the work of the student entering the contest. No assistance of other parties, including but not limited to brainstorming, editing, or proof reading, is permissible.
2. Essays cannot be longer than 700 words.
3. All essays must be typed double-space on white unlined paper in 12 point Times New Roman font.
4. The student’s telephone number should be typed on the top of each page. If more than one student from a family is participating in the same category, the number should be followed by a letter to distinguish it from the other students. Example: 540-338-5600A and 540-338-5600B.
5. The student must fill out an entry form with their full name, date of birth, HSLDA membership number (if applicable), address, email, and telephone number; this should be on a separate cover sheet of paper attached by a paperclip to the essay. This sheet should also include a one-sentence description of the essay’s contents (e.g., “Joan of Arc is my hero because she did the right thing no matter what other people said.”) and word count for the essay.
6. Do not type or write the student’s name or any other identifying information other than the phone number on anything other than the cover page.

This is a reminder that the registration for the 2009 Jr. Tournament will be opening Wednesday, September 9th. A tentative schedule for the tournament will also be published that day.
If you are homeschooled and under twelve years old by January 1st, this is a great opportunity to start working on speech skills! We'll also be needing a lot of more experienced speakers to judge -if you have competed in the NCFCA, or are over 18 please consider judging.

Students must be in their senior year of high school and can enter in the categories of Cinematic Arts, Dance, Jazz, Music, Photography, Theater, Visual Arts, Voice and Writing. The Colorado Rockies are sponsoring a Youth Essay Contest as part of their Hispanic Heritage program for the month of September. The contest is open to elementary students and middle school students. This is the first year that homeschoolers have been invited to participate. If they have enough response from homeschool students, they will create a separate homeschool category for judging. Each participant will receive 4 tickets to a Rockies game. The topic for the contest is Hispanic Heroes: how they affected the game of baseball and the community.
